SharePoint 2010 There was an error in communicating with Excel Calculation Services

There was some differences between my development farm and production farm after doing an in-place upgrade to SharePoint 2010. As a result I had some troubles with Excel Services. I was having trouble getting web parts to connect or open spreadsheets in a browser. Basically it came down to two things after making configuration changes:

  1. Restart IIS on the WFE’s rendering pages.
  2. Reboot the server that’s running Excel Calculation Services

There was an error in communicating with Excel Calculation Services http://SharePointServer/{id}/ExcelService*.asmx exception: The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable.

Unable to reach Excel Calculation Services http://SharePointServer/{id}/ExcelService*.asmx.

Technet Article
Cause:   The Excel Services Application server computer is in a non-valid state and may need to be restarted.

Restart the server
Before restarting, verify that this problem occurs often. It may be an intermittent problem that is automatically corrected and does not require you to restart the server.
